Best practice is to never use accounts with the name of administrator.. Or at the very least, renamed. Admittedly I haven't tested the bahavior to see what happens when your local administrator account is disabled while the domain admin account is still active.
But it probably does the same thing. It will default to the PC's computer name instead of your environment's domain that you just joined it. I've found that what you are suggesting doesn't work if there is a local account that is identically named to the domain account. If a local account exists, windows 7 login screen will always default to the local, regardless of whether that domain accunt is in the local users group. Now if there is NOT an identically named local account, then you can add a group policy entry that will specify the default domain to use, but a local account will still be defaulted if it exists.
